A silicone-based lubricant known as dielectric grease, sometimes known as tune-up grease, deters moisture and guards against corrosion on electrical contacts. Additionally, it protects electrical connections from contaminants like dirt, water, and other substances. It may be used for a variety of things, including wiring for recreational vehicles, homes, and car tune-ups. Since most liquids do not dissolve dielectric grease, it is suitable for marine and outdoor applications. This grease may be used to lubricate the rubber components of electrical connectors, spark plug wires, and to prevent corrosion on the electrical connections on your boat or recreational vehicle. Dielectric grease is silicone-based, thus it shouldn’t be applied on silicone-based rubber or plastics since it will eventually cause the materials to degrade. The mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection shouldn’t be directly greased since it doesn’t carry electricity.
How to Use Dielectric Grease
Apply a little amount of dielectric grease on the rubber boot end of a spark plug wire and spread it out so it just covers the interior of the lip in order to utilize it during an automobile tune-up on a gasoline or diesel engine. By doing this, high voltage electricity won’t be able to enter the boot and “leak” into the engine block. The dielectric grease will also make it simpler to slip the boot over the ceramic insulator on the spark plug and guarantee that there is a watertight seal around the plug to safeguard the connection from moisture and debris.
The gaskets on multi-pin connections, which are common in the electrical systems of boats and recreational vehicles, can also be coated with dielectric grease. Before putting the gasket around the connection, simply take a tiny dab of the oil and spread it over the gasket on both sides (if feasible).
Any electrical connection that will be exposed to the weather might have dielectric grease applied to the metal components as a sealer to guard against contamination and corrosion. This needs to be done very carefully because if any grease is left between the mating surfaces, it will stop the passage of electricity through the connection.
