There are various reasons why women might wish to induce their menstrual cycle. Some want their period to arrive before an important event, deadline week, or an upcoming camping trip. Others may have an irregular cycle and want more predictability so that they can plan a pregnancy. Or their period could be delayed, causing them to feel stressed or worried.
Whatever the reason, there are a number of non-drug methods that may help.If your period is late or you want to boost your period to start a day earlier to finish for some big event, there are some traditional options for this.

Substances that can help to induce a period are called emmenagogues. If there’s any chance your period is late because you are pregnant, using emmenagogues to induce a period may terminate your pregnancy. This can be very dangerous. Parsley has been traditionally used for inducing menstruation for centuries. “Apiol and myristicin, two substance contained in parsley, stimulate contractions of the uterus, which results in the inducing effect of your monthly cycle.
Your daily dose of parsley may be 6 g of dried parsley leaf which can consumed in 3 doses of 2 g each, boiled in 150 ml of water. Or drink parsley tea twice a day.
Cumin seeds, also known as jeera in Hindi, belong to the same family as parsley and also have a similar effect.
Carom seeds (Ajwain)
A concoction of carom seeds and jaggery will help in inducing periods besides relieving menstrual cramps.
Boil 1 tsp carom seeds with 1 tspjaggery in 1 glass of water and consume it empty stomach in the morning.
It’s the most effective home remedy available to prepone periods. Raw papaya stimulates contractions in the uterus and can help in inducing periods. The carotene present in papaya stimulates the estrogen hormone thereby inducing early period.
Papaya can be consumed raw or in the form of papaya juice two times a day. One cup of papaya juice (approx. 200ml) or one bowl of fresh ripe papaya can be eaten around the middle of the cycle for effect.
Ginger tea is one of the most powerful emmenagogue (herbs with magical properties that stimulates menstrual flow, resulting in promotion of menstruation), but unlike parsley it can have some side effects, like acidity. For extremely delayed periods, a combination of parsley and ginger tea is recommended. Ginger is thought to increase the heat around the uterus, thus promoting contraction.
Ginger can be consumed in the form of tea or fresh ginger juice with some honey or just as raw ginger along with honey. Drink a cup of fresh ginger juice with water (2:1) every morning on an empty stomach for a few days before the regular date.
Completely safe, natural and recommended by doctors, drinking celery juice is one way you can induce early period.
A fresh celery juice twice a day can stimulate the blood flow to your pelvis and uterus, thereby inducing your period.
Coriander seeds is said to be the most effective home remedy for irregular periods because of its emmenagogue properties.
Boil 1 tsp. of coriander with 2 cups of water and wait until the water reduces to just one cup. Use a strainer to remove the seeds and drink the concoction thrice a day for a couple of days before your monthly period.
Fennel seeds (Saunf)
Fennel seeds, also known as saunf in Hindi, can be boiled in water to make a fragrant tea that should be consumed every morning on an empty stomach in order to regulate your period and have a healthy flow.
Mix 2 tsp of fennel seeds in a glass of water and leave it overnight. Strain the water and drink it in the morning.
Fenugreek seeds (Methi)
Fenugreek, or methi, seeds are recommended by experts to induce period. Drink fenugreek seeds boiled in water.
The juice of pomegranate seeds is also helpful in inducing periods.
Start with drinking pure pomegranate juice three times a day at least 10 to 15 days before your regular date. Alternatively, mix pomegranate juice with sugar cane juice (1:1) and drink it four times a day.
Aloe vera juice is normally used to soothe an upset stomach, but it can be used to emmenagogue as well.
Cut an aloe vera leave into two and squeeze out the gel. Mix the gel with 1 tbsp of honey and consume it before breakfast. Carry on the process for months to have good results.
Sesame seeds (Til)
Sesame seeds, known as til in Hindi, can be consumed to induce your period, but they should only be eaten in moderation as they cause a lot of heat in your body.
These heat-producing seeds can be eaten daily around 15 days before your expected date to help you get your period earlier. You can also have a teaspoon of sesame seeds two times a day with hot water. Teaspoon of fried or plain sesame seeds with honey 2-3 times a day.
Vitamin C foods
High doses of vitamin C can induce menses by increasing the levels of estrogen in the body. Increased levels of this hormone stimulates uterine contractions, which in turn stimulates bleeding.
Vitamin C can also reduce progesterone levels, which initiate the breakdown of the uterine walls, leading to an early period. Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits, kiwis, and vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli and bell peppers can be included in your daily diet.
Another food that’s rich in carotene, carrot can be consumed plain or in the form of juice as many as 3 times a day.
Jaggery when mixed with ginger, sesame seed and carom seed is an effective natural home remedy to prepone periods.
Boil a spoon of turmeric in a glass of water and consume it twice a day to have your periods induced, probably 10 days before your expected date.
Dates are known to generate heat in the body. Eat dates all day in a well-measured quantity to induce periods before the due date.
The carotene present in pumpkins is a great mechanism in inducing periods.
Salmon has the properties of improving and stabilising your hormones and thus resulting in getting rid of menstruation issues. Other types of fish and fish oil are also useful in regulating your period.
These healthy and nutritious nuts are rich in fiber and protein that help balance your hormones and get regular periods.
Contains heat generating properties in the form of, pineapple can be taken in large quantities.
A glass of fresh grape juice every morning can help you get rid of irregular period.
Although yogurt has a cooling effect on your body, it helps regulate your period.
Eggs are rich in proteins that help your body deal with menstrual problems.
Rich in calcium, tofu can be a good addition to your regular diet to get your period on time.
This option is for the vegans and lactose intolerant. It is said to contain phytoestrogens that help regulate irregular menstrual cycles.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar works wonder when it comes to inducing periods, especially when they are late. It helps by alkalising the body and reducing inflammation caused by hormonal irregularities.
Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a warm glass of water and drink it twice a day before your meals. This might even get your delayed periods restarted in just one-two days.
Deficiency of iodine in the body has been linked with thyroid problems, which can cause havoc in your menstrual cycle. Consume a few drops of organic iodine in one glass of water can trigger periods by correcting the imbalance. You can also add magnesium, vitamin c and selenium in your diet for better results.
Black strap molasses
Rich in iron, potassium, calcium and phosphorous, black strap molasses can trigger periods almost immediately. It also helps in relieving premenstrual and menstrual cramps.
- Avoid aerated drinks and caffeine. They interfere with your monthly cycle, thus resulting in delayed periods.
- Expose yourself to sunlight! Vitamin D is essential to absorb calcium and many other body functions.
